Fruitful changes and reforms on the estate - Rutger Macklean and his inventions
Rutger Macklean is one of the most famous owners of the former estate in Svaneholm, who inherited the castle in the late 18th century with 7,000 acres and four villages from his mothers family. At that time, peasants of the villages suffered from severe poverty due to little land because of the succession. Rutger Macklean was an educated man with great knowledge in agriculture, so he set up reforms and helped to re-invent the laws to have a more efficient way of farming. Each farmer was allowed to farm n a parcel of 40-50 acres, new three-length farms were built in a building method, which was obtained from Pomerania. He also introduced a new plant sequence and new farming methods. Rutger Macklean built schools for the children and also had them vaccinated against smallpox. By his death in 1816, agriculture flourished and prosperity among the population had increased. Learn more, when visiting the exhibition.
